Practising with a Learner Driver
The
first
time
you
sit
in
the
passenger
seat
next
to
a
Beginning
Driver
who
has
just
acquired
their
Learner’s
Licence,
you
will
be
amazed
at
how
many
hazards
and
dangerous
situations
you
suddenly
see.
They
are
everywhere:
bicycles,
speeding
cars,
pedestrians
looking
at
their
cell
phones,
animals,
holes
and
bumps
in
the
road,
large
trucks,
so
many
street
signs
that
require
attention.
The
route
from
Beginning
to
Independent
seems
almost impossible.
At
Safety
Services
Nova
Scotia,
our
driving
instructors
proceed
through
a
sequence
from
isolated
and
almost
hazard-free
locations
(large
empty
parking
lots),
through
light
and
moderate
traffic
situations
to
complex
driving
situations
(downtown
city
driving).
Admittedly,
our
driving
instruction
vehicles
have
two
sets
of
brake
pedals,
but
the
first
rule
of
driving
instruction
is
to
avoid
exposing
the
student
to
more
than
he
or
she
can
handle
(and
even
then,
surprises
do
occur
-
always be ready!)
